INTRODUCTION

EGYBORT 2MG contain Bortezomib which belongs to a group of medicine called proteasome inhibitor. Proteasomes plays an important role in controlling cell function and growth. By interfering with their function, it can kill cancer cells. It is used to treat multiple myeloma (a cancer of the bone marrow) and mantle cell lymphoma (a type of cancer affecting the lymph nodes) in patients 18 years or older.

Multiple myeloma is a cancer of plasma cells (a type of white blood cell in the bone marrow). In this condition, a group of plasma cell becomes cancerous and multiplies causing damage to the bone, immune system, kidney, and red blood cell count. It is also called as kahler’s disease. Mantle cell lymphoma develops when B-cell (also called B-lymphocyte) become abnormal. B-cell are white blood cell that fight infection. The abnormal B-cell (lymphoma cell) usually build up in lymph nodes, but they can affect other parts of the body.

EGYBORT 2MG will be given to you by a doctor or nurse. It is intended to be administered by intravenous or subcutaneous. It is strictly not recommended for use in children and adolescents under 18 years. Before taking this medicine tell your doctor if you have ever had kidney disease, heart disease, liver problems. Pregnant and breastfeeding women should consult their doctor before taking this medicine. The most common side effects are nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, constipation, with or without bloating, diarrhoea, tiredness (fatigue), feeling weak or loss of consciousness, muscle pain, bone pain, low or high blood pressure, reduced kidney function, headache and shivering.

HOW EGYBORT 2MG WORKS

EGYBORT 2MG works by blocking or slowing the breakdown of proteins in cells. As a result, there is an increase in a number of proteins in the cancer cells leading to their death.

DIRECTIONS FOR USE

EGYBORT 2MG will be given to you by a doctor or nurse. It is intended to be administered by intravenous or subcutaneous. Your doctor will decide the dose and frequency depending on your condition.

SIDE EFFECTS OF EGYBORT 2MG

SERIOUS

  • Confusion
  • Visual loss or disturbances, blindness
  • Seizures
  • Swelling of your feet or changes in your heartbeat

COMMON

  • Sensitivity, numbness, tingling or burning sensation of the skin, or pain in the hands or feet, due to nerve damage
  • Decrease in the number of red and white blood cell and platelet in your blood
  • Fever, rash
  • Nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, diarrhoea
  • Constipation, with or without bloating
  • Tiredness (fatigue), feeling weak or loss of consciousness
  • Muscle pain, bone pain
  • Low or high blood pressure
  • Reduced kidney function
  • Headache
  • Shivering
  • Infection including pneumonia, respiratory infection, bronchitis, fungal infection, coughing with phlegm, flu-like illness
  • Shingles (localised, including around the eye or spread across the body)
  • Dehydration
  • Heartburn, belching, wind, stomach pain, bleeding from your bowels or stomach
  • Alteration of liver functioning
  • A sore mouth or lips, dry mouth, mouth ulcers or throat pain
  • Weight loss, loss of taste
  • Muscle cramp, muscle spasm, muscle weakness, pain in your limb
  • Difficulty or problem in sleeping, sweating, anxiety, mood swings, depressed mood, restlessness or agitation, changes in your mental status, disorientation

RARE

  • Heart problems including heart attack, angina
  • Inflammation of the spinal nerve
  • Bleeding from your ear
  • Underactivity of your thyroid gland
  • Bleeding in the brain
  • Yellow discolouration of eyes and skin (jaundice)
  • Serious allergic reaction (anaphylactic shock)
  • Breast disorders
  • Vaginal tears
  • Genital swelling
  • Increased appetite
  • Fistula, joint effusion
  • Skin cancer
  • Increase of platelet or plasma cell (a type of white cell) in the blood
  • Decreased sex drive
  • Rectal pain
  • Gallstones
  • Hernia

HOW TO MANAGE SIDE EFFECTS

Fever:

Drink plenty of fluids and water. Avoid taking cold bath or showers.

Nausea and vomiting:

Try taking this medicine with, or just after, a meal or snack and stick to simple meals and do not eat rich or spicy food.

Constipation: 

Take fibre rich foods such as fresh fruit, vegetables and cereals, and drink plenty of water. Exercise more regularly.

Diarrhoea:

Drink lot of fluid such as water or squash, to avoid dehydration. Do not take any other medicines without talking to a doctor.

Headache:

Apply hot or cold-water bag on your head. Take rest in a quiet and dark room. Drink tea or coffee.

WARNING & PRECAUTIONS

PREGNANCY

EGYBORT 2MG is not recommended for use in pregnant women unless necessary. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.

BREASTFEEDING

EGYBORT 2MG is not recommended for use in breastfeeding women unless necessary. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.

DRIVING AND USING MACHINES

Do not drive or operate any machine while taking this medicine as it may cause tiredness, dizziness, fainting, or blurred vision.

ALCOHOL

Consumption of alcohol is not recommended during treatment with EGYBORT 2MG.

KIDNEY

EGYBORT 2MG should be used with caution in patients suffering from active kidney diseases. Consult your doctor for advice.

LIVER

EGYBORT 2MG should be used with caution in patients suffering from liver function impairment or active liver diseases. Consult your doctor for advice.

ALLERGY

Do not take EGYBORT 2MG if you are allergic (hypersensitive) to bortezomib or any other ingredients in this medicine.

LUNGS

EGYBORT 2MG is not recommended in patients with active lung diseases (severe lung). Before taking this medicine consult your doctor.

HEART DISEASE

EGYBORT 2MG is not recommended in patients with active heart diseases. Before taking this medicine consult your doctor.

OTHERS

Tell your doctor if you have or had a condition such as,

  • Low numbers of red or white blood cells
  • Bleeding problem and/or low number of platelets in your blood
  • Diarrhoea, constipation, nausea, or vomiting
  • Fainting, dizziness, or light-headedness in the past
  • Numbness, tingling, or pain in the hand or feet (neuropathy) in the past
  • Blood pressure problems
  • Seizures
  • Shingles (localised, including around the eye or spread across the body)
  • Symptom of tumour lysis syndrome such as muscle cramping, muscle weakness, confusion, visual loss, or disturbances
  • Serious brain infection (symptoms include memory loss, trouble thinking, difficulty with walking or loss of vision)

INTERACTIONS

Talk to your doctor if you are taking,

  • Ketoconazole (used to treat fungal infections)
  • Ritonavir (used to treat HIV infection)
  • Antibiotic such as rifampicin (used to treat bacterial infections)
  • Carbamazepine, phenytoin, or phenobarbital (used to treat epilepsy)
  • St. John’s Wort (Hypericum perforatum) (used to treat depression or other conditions)
  • Oral antidiabetics
